Travel

What's your favorite way to travel? Car, plane, train, boat? What do you do while you're traveling? (Assuming you're not the driver!)

That's all a matter of where I am trying to get to. Anywhere in the North Island & I prefer to fly, it gets you there quicker, unless of course the whole point of the trip is the car & ferry ride across the strait.

Within the South Island I am happy to go in the car. It is definitely better to have a DVD player in the car for the boys to watch. If it is a family trip, which nearly all of them are, then Scott will do the driving & I'll just look at the scenery & watch the road.

There is a train trip that I would like to take across to the West Coast of the South Island just to take in the scenery. The train goes a slightly different way to the road so you see different stuff.

It really does all depend on where I'm going & what I'm going for as to what mode of transport to take.

The Week that's been

Monday night we had the year 3 BBQ. We found out that Brent's teacher Miss Flynn came from Invercargill (Southland Girls High) & then after her training she went over to London & worked in a school where she had to work on discipline before she could even begin to teach. I still managed to get Brent into a sticky situation with her last week.

On wednesday Brent brought home a notice asking us to fill in if we want him to play soccer, hockey or rugby through the school. So as we had already registered at Burnside for soccer we didn't fill in the form. Brent came home on Thursday & said that he has to return the form whether he is playing for the school or not. Honestly if the school can't get their database up to date why would they want a peice of paper that is not totally filled in to confuse things? I reread the notice & nowhere does it say to fill in & send back to the school regardless of if your son is doing sport through the school or not. Poor Brent had even told Miss Flynn that he is registered with Burnside & won't be playing for the school, but she reckons the notice had to handed in. I feel so bad for Brent, he doesn't seem to get on well with the teacher & then I do something like not hand in a form & really it doesn't make Brent look too good. I just can't win with this teacher & I am growing to dislike her rigidity more & more.

We also heard that she has been made a full time member of the staff. All of the year 4 parents cheered but I just groaned. The story is, that this teacher was standing in while the other teacher was on maternity leave. It would appear that the other teacher isn't coming back so Miss Flynn now has a full time position at the school.

I have been doing an online photography course through http://www.scrapbookoutletnz.co.nz For the homework last week I had to take some up close photos & also some using fill flash. This is James having fun on the seesaw on a hot day last Tuesday.

We also had to take a photo using leading lines so this is Brent on the swing.

No effort cards arrived on Friday becase apparently the school had problems with the printer. They have had all sorts of holdups on stationary & also the database not updating information. There seems to be a bit of a gremlin in the Medbury sytem or admin at the moment. The year 1 parents never got a notice until the afternoon of the BBQ to tell them what to bring. Of all the years you would think that would really need one it would have to be year 1. Only 2 of the families from year 1 had ever been to a BBQ put on by the school. At least by year 3 most families have been to at least 1 & if they haven't they can ask the other parents. I sometimes find the whole communication from the school really inadequate & then with that problem with Brent's sports notice it is just getting to be really annoying. I am hoping that this week will be realtively quiet on the school front. I hope to have a good natter to the other year 3 mum's on Wednesday & find out if I am the only one who has a problem with Miss Flynn.

The boys both had friends over to play yesterday. Brent had Josh over (really to give Nigel & Kim some time so Nigel can recuperate). James had Jack over to play & once Jack got over his shyness & the other 3 boys calmed down things went really well. Both boys branched off & played with their friend. It was so much easier than only having one friend around & making things more of a 2 against 1 deal.

I did manage to complete a layout this weekend. Next weekend I should get a whole lot more finished as I am going to a crop!

Not much else has been happening around here.

P & R your bed is waiting for you & the boys can't wait to see you. I hope you have a good trip up.

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Pets

Do you have any pets? What are their names? What kind of animals are they? Why do you like them?

We have one cat called Mo. She is a short haired brown tabby that we picked up about 11 years ago from the SPCA in Wellington. We went in there looking for a kitten but she caught my attention & she wanted a lot of love & affection. She seemed to choose me rather than the other way around. We picked her up about a day later after she had been spayed. I asked what her name was & they said it was Mossy, because of her colouring. I couldn't work out how she could be called Mossy because she wasn't green. I shortened her name down to Mo. She was 4 years old at the time, so fully housebroken & very playful & independent.

After Brent was born she learnt to keep away from babies & kept very much to herself. Once we moved down here though the climate must have suited her more or something because she spends more time outside than inside. As the children have got older she has also become more sociable, but she still stays away from babies & unpredictable preschoolers.

This is Mo last year sitting on the garage on a winter morning trying to warm up.

Sleeping tricks

What do you do when you have trouble sleeping? Any special techniques for counting sheep or secret family recipes for warm milk?

I am a very light sleeper & also find it hard to get to sleep if Scott goes to sleep first. The sound of him peacefully breathing while I am trying to get to sleep drives me to distraction. I have tried breathing at the same rhythm as him since he must have the secret to getting to sleep, but that doesn't always work. I always try to make sure that I have read a chapter of my book & am asleep before Scott comes to bed. If I am still awake I carry on reading until I feel dozzy. Invariably that doesn't work & I end up lying there just thinking. I try to think of a nice place & relax & that sometimes works. If not I will be out of bed & sleeping in the spare bedroom where I can read my book until I get tired & then fall asleep.

Books

What kind of care do you take of your books? Let's review, shall we?
1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I try to be very careful with the spines.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use a bookmark. At the moment my book mark is one of those subscription offer cards that comes in scrapbooking magazines. I have thought about making one but that is as far as that has got.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
When I was at university studying I would highlight important parts of text books. I don't mark books now though.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into bookbags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
No I don't toss books on the floor normally. They get placed carefully on my bedside table.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Only if it is going to be a short break like 5 minutes or so, but otherwise no.

6. Um--water? Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
No my thought is that water & paper don't go together to well.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
We have a bookcase that has books crammed on to it. Our reference books a neat & tidy, the other books are a bit more higgledy piggledy.

8. Do you make a distinction--as regards book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
No there is no difference, I treat all books the same.

9. And, to recap? Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
I can only read books once, unless of course it was a text book & I had to reread it several times. So my books a loving read, gently & then I try & give them away to other people to read.

Crayon Colours

The Colors in the Box
1. If you were a crayon, which color would you want to be? I like blue so I would want to be blue

2. Which color do you think you would be regardless of what you wanted? I'm not a popular person so I would say something like brown.

3. Would you rather be used and get blunt, broken and lose your wrapper, or not be used and stay pristine? I would prefer to be used & get blunt.

4. Would you rather be in a small set of crayons or a large set? In a large set

5. Would you rather be Crayola, or a different brand? Crayola simply because I don't know any other brands.

Getting Personal

Let's get personal!
Personal Hygiene
1. How often do you typically shower/bath? Once a day

2. Do you prefer showering or taking a bath? A shower but a realxing bath once in a while is wonderful.

3. What's the longest you've ever gone w/o a shower/bath? That would have been the 4 days we were in Hanmer. We were swimming every day though.

4. What's your favorite personal hygiene product? My deoderant, it has to be an antipersperant as well.

5. Do you shave your legs? If so how often? Yes, every 2nd day

Exercise log week ending 18/2/07

It's been a GO ME week! I have lost 1 kg for my efforts so that is pleasing.

Monday I went to the gym & did my weights routine.
Tuesday I ran non stop for 15 minutes. I am thrilled since I haven't actaully run since September last year so I'm pleased I could do that.
Wednesday was a bit of a write off. I had great intentions. I went to Corsiar Bay to see how I would go without a wetsuit in a 750m swim (as a prelude to the ocean swim classic). The sun was out, but not on the beach, but I wasn't deterred. I went out to my calves & boy was it cold! It was freezing so that was the end of my swim & all thought of competing in this weekend's swim classic went flying out the window.
Thursday I went for my swim (but in Jellie Park pool). I did my 750m non stop freestyle & then carried on & did another 250m in a mixture of breast stroke & backstroke.
Friday I went to the gym & did my weights routine.

I am really hoping that this week I will complete all 5 days of exercise. I have eased into it now by doing 4 days for 2 weeks so it must be time to get up to 5 days.

Weekly Review

Well what a week it has been. It's been very busy with school stuff & with me trying to learn a new way of doing things for year 3 (standard 1). The year 3 teacher is realtively new, as in she's only been there a term, so we are all trying to learn how to do things. Unfortunately I have had a run in with her already & there have been several instances when I didn't fill in Brent's homework diary as fully as it has to be. Unfortunately she kind of put my back up when we got told that because Brent had missed one day of school he had missed out on a lot. The way she said it was basically reprimanding me for having him out of school. I realise I shouldn't have him out of school but I really thought that we should all have a family holiday, just us, where it was only using one day of Scott's annual leave allocation. What the heck is wrong with that, when even the school's that started off early had the Monday before Waitangi Day off. I really think we should make Waitangi day connect to a weekend (either be a Monday or a Friday) & then if we do that we may as well change the name to NZ Day which is what I think would be far more beneficial for race relations in this country.

Scott's very interested in meeting this teacher on Monday at the meet the teacher BBQ.

On Thursday we had the meet the teacher BBQ for the year 1 class. Mrs Williams said the same speech that she said about two years ago to us when Brent was in that class. It was good to get to meet some of the parents of the new boys that are in James' class.

This weekend Brent has been staying with nana. Earlier on this week Brent had been very sad & withdrawn although he had come right by Thursday. I think it might have stemed from the huge amount of homework he was coping to do each night. He was spending 30 minutes on maths, 30 minutes on his spelling & english activity sheet & then another 10 -15 doing his reading. He was just absolutely switching off & would bualk at the sight of so many sums to do for maths. Luckily he has now been assessed & is having a remedial maths class so the homework has suddenly dropped off a lot. What was taking him 30 minutes to do has been trimmed down to a far easier 15 minutes. Hopefully this is about how it will stay because I think I have got a system worked out to cope with it. We will start by doing his spelling together (I have to test him) & then I should be able to move on to James for 15 minutes. Once that 15 is up we will all go & have a break for 15 & then we will come back & Brent will do his 15 minutes of maths. After dinner we will do his reading (he loves reading so it's not such an issue) & then I'll read to them both. Hopefully this will work & Brent will still be our happy smiling boy.

Today we went & registered both boys for soccer at the Burnside club. I didn't realise it was one of the largest in the South Island. James will be in the 4 &5 year old group learning basic skills & Brent will be in 7th grade. Brent has said all term that he wants soccer to be his winter sport so I thought we would take the chance & enrol them both. James isn't quite so keen on the idea but seemed very happy when he got to put on his shin guards that Scott bought him today. At this stage it looks like the soccer will start just after the April holidays. Both boys will be playing at Burnside Park so at least we will all be in the same vacinity as each other, that should make spectating easy.

Next week we have the BBQ on Monday as well as Brent's swimming lesson. On Thursday we will have James' swimming lesson & then both boys have their school swimming lesson on Friday. They should both be bringing home effort cards on Friday too. Mrs Williams has already told me that there will be a lot of yellow on James' card because he just doesn't listen (no kidding! why aren't I surprised?). She can't believe how chalk & cheese the boys are. I have no idea how Brent is going, I can see him putting in a fair bit of effort at home but I'm not sure what the classroom situation is like.

That must be about it for this week so I hope you all have a good week & keep well.

School Calendar

First off I should really show you the calendar for the school term. That doesn't look very easy to read so in summary:
We are up to week 4 already of a 10 week term.
We have a BBQ to meet up with Brent's teacher tomorrow.
Effort cards are coming home at the end of this week. Not really expecting good results on James one at all.
The boys have swimming lessons with the school on Friday this week (they have already had 2 other lessons on the previous Fridays)
There is a swimming week in week 5
The school swimming sports are at 11am - 12 noon at Jellie Park on Friday 9 March
There are parent/teacher interviews the following Monday or Tuesday (it will have to Tuesday in our case)
Tuesday 20 March James has a field trip to Ferrymead & then another field trip on Thursday 22 March to Yaldhurst Transport Museum.
Sunday 25 March both boys have the Junior school church service.
Boys finish the term on Thursday 5 April at 3pm.

Living out loud

“If you ask me what I come to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I am here to live out loud.” ~ Emile Zola ~What does “living out loud” mean for you?

Living out loud to me means living my life as fully as possible. That was easy to say but what does that really mean? I will try & follow my dreams & live my life to the full. I certainly don't want to be close to death & suddenly think, oh heck that's what I wanted to do. I want to be able to look back at my life & say that I am happy with how I have lived it & I have done what I wanted to do.

Valentine's Day

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? (Or do you?)

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. Our wedding anniversary has really only just been swo we celebrate that & give Valentine's Day a miss. Saying that, this year I did give each of the three males in the house a valentine's card. In return I got to spend an evening on the computer doing an online photogrphy class. A pretty good deal I think!

Manic Mondays

It’s just another manic Monday…” Write about why you like (or don’t like) Mondays.

I don't have a feeling either one way or the other for Monday. Yes it is the first day of the working week, but the boys also go back to school. But then they are usually grumpy about having to go to school & seem to really drag their feet. I am a SAHM so going back to work is not a problem because of course I am always at work.
I personally love Fridays. I consider Friday to be "my day." Hopefully by Friday I have finished all the housework other than the laundry & I can run errands, treat myself if I have the spare cash, or just try to get some time to scrap. I don't have to cook dinner because we usually go up to mum's. It is the only day I see mum normally so that makes it nice a nice end to the day too.

At the moment it is Tuesdays that I don't like exercise wise. It is the day that I go for a jog. Running is not my favourite sport & add to that a dodgy knee it really is a huge deal to go out & do that run. I am pleased to say that I did go for my run today.

Thursdays seem to be a horrible day for the boys. It's not that they might think it a horrible day but by Thursday they have got all tired & grumpy & are little horrors for me. Thursday also is the day that Scott goes to Wellington usually so that is just an extra added stress. The boys always seem to act up when Scott is in Wellington so Thursdays are just horrible on those times.

Most days are so so, with each following after the other, seemingly faster & faster each year.

Hanmer

We had a wonderful weekend in Hanmer. We started out later than we had anticpated because Mo decided to stay up in the garage & wouldn't come down. In the end we left with the side door of the garage wedged open so that she could come down when she deigned to.

We got to Hanmer around 6:30 & found our place at 9 Leamington Street very easily.

It was a nice place with a newly renovated kitchen & bathroom. The rest of the place had a bachy feel to it but we all thought it was lovely. The boys especially thought they were made when they got to sleep in their sleeping bags.

On Saturday we decided to check out the pools after breakfast. It started off miserable & grey so we went without putting sun screen on. That was a mistake because Scott got very burnt & both James & I got a tan. We stayed at the pools until a late lunch time & then we gave the boys a rest after lunch. We went back to the pools after dinner & stayed until closing time at 9pm. James was fascinated at how they cover the heated pools at night.

On Sunday we went for a mountain bike ride through the forest. We did find it hard to see some of the signage & at one point it wasn't until we got to the end of one of the tracks that we found we weren't supposed to be riding along it. However we all had fun & James enjoyed the end part of it where he got to play in the Dog Creek. After lunch we went out & played some mini putt. It was 18 holes & I quite enjoyed it, although it is definitely more relaxing playing without the children in tow. James was quite good at the putting part but was very keen to just race around & look at all the other holes rather than watch the rest of us play our hole it. Brent had a lack of concentration & also didn't know from one hole to the next wether to play left handed or right handed. He seemed to perform the same with either hand. I really do think he might be ambidextrous. Brent was the person who asked to play mini putt but in actaul fact after hole 3 he was wanting to give up. We made him "play the game" but I don't think he is going to suggest it for a while now.

On Monday we decided to go geocaching. I wanted to go to Loch Katrine, so we headed towards Lake Taylor. On the way there we came across the tiny place of Medbury & because the boys were supposed to be at Medbury on Monday I had to have photographic proof that they were, admittedly they were a few 100 km north of the one they were supposed to be at.

We drove to Lake Taylor & stopped there for a bite to eat. While we were there a Fisheries officer came to the lake & said that we really shouldn't drive to the loch unless we had a higher clearance 4WD. Luckily it was a beautiful sunny day & there were boats on the lake. James was in his element & he loved it. He was very happy puddling in the lake & watching all the boats. We ended up having lunch there & left at about 2pm to find some more caches.

In the end we actually found 5 caches around the Hanmer area, including a multi cache that required a walk up Conical Hill. That night we went to the pools because my knee was very saw from all the exercise in the past few days.

Tuesday we packed up & left. We went & bought me a swim costume as I had noticed that my other one had almost perished across the bust. Certainly wouldn't have been a good look at the pool. We came home via Sefton & took a photo at Criglington's Road.

It was a wonderful break & the boys loved it.

James' sayings

List some phrases that you hear your spouse (or other family member) saying a lot. Or, for something different, take note of some of the funny things that come out of the mouths of the kids in your life!

James says the funniest things.

When he was little (about 2) he called butterflies, "brocliflies". I have a funny feeling that it was because we were growing brocolli in the garden at that time. Of course those plants are just calling out to every white butterfly in existence & there were tons of butterflies on them. I think James put two & two together & got brocliflies. Quite funny really but when you think about it it seems a better name for them than butterflies. Why are they called butterflies? I've never seen one land on butter. What has the butter part got to do with the name. Maybe it is actually one of those many English words that has it's derivation from another language & then got corrupted.

In October last year the poor boy was obviously on some kind of growth spurt & was having long afternoon naps. When he woke up after a long nap he walked into a door at mum's. I asked him if he had his eyes switched on & he said he did but his "brain cogs aren't working!" LOL

Weighty thoughts

Now that the boys are finally back it school it is time for me to get back onto the weight loss track again. So I thought I would publish my exercise log for the week to keep myself accountable to myself. I am going on a cruise in October & by then I want to lose about 20kgs. I have taken out a gym membership & have been given a weights routine. The trainer thought my weight problem maybe more hormonal than anything so we are trying a weights routine as opposed to a running, get fit routine. Apparently a get fit routine is at odds with a loose weight routine & I should be doing more weights than cardio.

So on to this weeks exercise:

Saturday - in Hanmer but went for a mountain bike ride with the boys for about an hour so.
Sunday - still away in Hanmer & did no exercise other than walking around the township.
Monday - still away in Hamner but we went geocaching which involved climbing up Conical hill for about 20 minutes as well as a lot of other walking
Tuesday - away in Hanmer & no real exercise was done
Wednesday - Went swimming. Swam 750metres freestyle non stop. Almost thinking about entering this http://www.nzoceanswim.co.nz/default.asp?PageID=5754
Thursday - Went biking. Went out to McLeans Island. Thought I would bike until I got to Chattertons Road & then head back (10 km). I was biking along & never found Chattertons Road so stopped at Old West Coast Road intersection & turned back. Showed Scott where I went last night & it would appear that I biked 16km. No wonder my butt was sore!
Today - Did my weights routine about 35 minutes, increased my weights back up to my ending point last year.

Jumped on the scales & my weight has gone up 1 kg. That is most disappointing however at least I did exercise most days this week so GO ME!

Sayings

What adages, mottoes, or phrases of advice were common in your family when you were growing up? (e.g., "Cleanliness is next to Godliness." "No use crying over spilled milk." "Do what I say, not what I do.") Write about a specific incident when the phrase was used.Do those words still have any power over you?

I think one of the sayings I heard the most was "because I told you to that's why". I must have asked why I had to do something & in the end the response was always that. Funny thing is that now I find myself saying the same thing back to my boys.

Another one that I heard a lot was "don't keep that look on your face otherwise it will be there for good when the wind changes."

I am sure there were a lot more that were said but I can't remember them. I normally don't remember them until all of a sudden they are coming out of my mouth & then it is instant flashback.

One saying that I remember but it is not really from my childhood, rather from a few years ago is "God never gives us more than we can handle." Granny told me that & it has been a source of comfort on those long sleepless nights in the last few years. Those are really the words that have power now, as does "what goes around, comes around."
Blog Prompt: What was the worst meal you ever had?

The worst meal I ever had was cooked by a flatmate of mine in Wellington (Amapur Drive). She liked spicy food & for some reason she had a grudge against me & Scott. Right know I can't remember what the grudge was about so really it can't have been important in the scheme of things, but she did leave the next day.

Anyway it was her turn to cook & she got down the wok & put in the rice & some sauce. Well once the meal had been cooked up it was black looking, I decided to give it a try. It was just hideous, not only was it very spicy but it had this horrid taste of like mud underneath the heat of the spice. I asked her what she put in it & she said she put in a bit of black bean sauce, chilli sauce, a bit of this, a bit of that. I only had that one mouthful then needed to drink a whole glass of milk. Scott was not going to get cowed down by her so he ate the whole lot. I asked him if he liked it, he didn't, but he was not going to give that girl the victory she wanted.

Art

Blog Prompt: The first thing I made that I considered art was . .

I have thought about this all day & still can't come up with an answer. I guess it really depends on what you call art.

For a long time I thought art was the drawing/painting medium. I can tell you that the best art I did in that respect was at Selwyn House primary school when we had nature diary. Each weekend we had to find a piece of nature, plants, birds, animals etc & then write about it. That was the easy part the next part was the hardest, we then had to use watercolour paints & paint it. I hated that part because I can not draw for peanuts.

I got given a cross stitch scene that was a stitch by colour, which I completed & enjoyed. That led me to doing counted cross stitch & some of those are quite good. I always follow a pattern though. Is that art?

I really think the answer is determined on what you define art as. My definition of art is very narrow & by my definition I haven't created anything worthy enough to be called art.

Technology

Blog Prompt : What technological discoveries are bridging the gap between generations in your family? Are you teaching your parents or are your kids teaching you?

I don't think I am teaching my mother, my sister is doing that. I don't need to teach my dad as he is up with the play on technology. So are the kids teaching me? Not really but I do find it amazing the technology that children have available to them today.

Scott & I were talking about what to take to Hanmer for the weekend. I said that they don't have a phone in the holiday home so there will be no internet access, but there is a TV. They don't have SKY so the boys will be limited to the 4 or 5 free to view channels. They hire out DVD players so if we have the cables we could take the portable DVD player up there & plug it into the TV so that the boys can watch the DVD on the TV screen instead of the little screen.

All of these things are new technology. When I was the same age as Brent sure we had a TV but it probably only ever had 1 channel & it may have been black & white still. DVD was not in existence & pay for view TV sure wasn't available in NZ. We would go outside & play instead of sitting & watching tv.

I am really hoping that the weather in Hanmer will be kind to us so I can send the boys outside to play, so we can go walking or biking through the forest. Luckily the geothermal pools are open all year round & are fantastic no matter what temperature it is outside.

Have a wonderful weekend everybody & Happy Birthday Robin.

Mindless drivel

Blog Prompt: Write for at least five minutes any words that come into your head. Forget punctuation, spelling, syntax, even meaning. If you get stuck, keep writing the last word you wrote until a new one comes.

What a strange prompt, mindless drivel,oh no, i can't think of anything else clear the head just type type James is whinging again about going to school wish he wouldn't wouldn't rain today today want to go swimming it has been a long time since I went swimming should I go inside or outside I think I'll go & try out the waters in the outside pool James is crying now & won't get dressed dressed dressed I can smell my coffeee it is just asking to get drunk but I must keep typing for 5 minutes anything can be done for 5 minutes Flylady says 15 but at least 5 minutes of this might be accomplishable Scott is urging James to get dressed all because James is tired I can't help it that he is tired we put him to bed early but school seems to have fryed his brain yesterday yesterday, of course it was a beautiful sunny day yesterday
